Ottawa's hockey team has nearly always been called the Senators both officially and/or unofficially, right back the original pre-NHL days in the mid-to-late 1800s. They've also gone by other nicknames including the Ottawa Silver Seven. When the new franchise was granted in 1991, they brought back the historical name.

As to why they called it the Senators back then, I don't know for sure, though the fact that Ottawa is the capital city and includes the Senate (and senators) is a good theory.
