What is wrong with the Detroit Red Wings?

Hi everyone. I love NBA and NHL, i'm a Detroit fan in every sport league but living in France i only see the Pistons and Lions play. Hockey isn't very big in Europe...
Can people please tell me what are their problems this year and why they aren't among the best teams in the league? Thanks!!!!!
